I wasn't there so i don't know what the black seeds were (wild guess, 
nigella), but there is not a doubt in the world that they were NOT 
galangal.
Galangal is a rhizome closely related to ginger. It looks a lot like 
ginger, but the "fingers" are more cylindrical and the whole rhizome 
is much harder. Not a seed at all. In fact, the plant does not make 
seeds. It is propagated by breaking up the hands and planting the 
fingers.
