Nah, not too tough for a milkshake. In fact, even Big Jule is  
witnessed drinking a milkshake (looked more like straight milk or a  
vanilla egg cream to me, but hey...). It's just that they're even  
better when sweetened and preserved with that special ingredient some  
Cubans add to milk to keep it from going bad in the heat of the day.  
Something called Bacardi, apparently...

Hey, thinking back, there are a whole lot of great food references in  
the works of Runyon, most especially all of the short story "A Piece  
of Pie", and the climax of "A Very Honorable Guy," wherein [spoiler  
alert] Feet Samuels' life is saved from the murderous Doc Bodeecker  
by an angry Hortense Hathaway, armed with a ham.
