Sounds A LOT like the Russian (USSR, to be more precise) version of the Napoleon cake.
The pastry is millefeuille, and the filling is either the sour-cream
kind (the cheaper version) or a sort of zabaglione, perhaps with flour
in it.
The more layers you make, the more luxurious the cake is considered to
be :-)
Solwerlad,
who grew up in USSR, but never really liked that kind of cake.
Bac> I have a student this year who is Russian - her family has only been in the
Bac> US for a year - and her mother sent her classroom staff a wonderful cake for
Bac> Christmas. Her mother does not speak much English and we have no idea what
Bac> this is, but it's yummy!
Bac> It is many layers (at least 10) of very thin pastry of some sort alternating
Bac> with a cream sort of filling. The pastry looks sort of like graham crackers
Bac> and is about the same thickness, but is not as sweet and is much softer and
Bac> moister. I do think there are crushed graham crackers or something similar
Bac> on top. The filling looks more like vanilla pudding than anything, but I was
Bac> getting a slightly tangy taste that makes me think it might either be
Bac> sour-cream based or have a small amount of lemon or something in it. No blatantly
Bac> obvious spicing.
Bac> Anyone have any idea what this might be, or better yet a recipe?
Bac> Brangwayna Morgan
