Excellent! Thanks a lot Devra and Phlip, this sounds like the perfect recipe for my afternoon tea. I love beetroot - it's a NZ (and probably Australian) childhood thing I think; no BBQ was complete without slices of pickled beetroot! And usually a platter of stuffed eggs also, so this is a good hybrid of the two.

Thank you Phlip. :-) I have been reading the list but haven't had anything to contribute as I haven't been doing anything SCA recently (read: 2 Year Burnout Recovery). I have been doing some medieval cooking though. I made crespes the other day, from "The Medieval Cookbook", which were lovely (and not just because they used wine!) ;-D and I'll probably make them again next week on Shrove Tuesday (if anyone is interested, I have the Medieval French recipe, English translation and modern redaction taken wholesale from The Medieval Kitchen here: http://thorngrove.livejournal.com/52749.html)

Currently I'm working on the chicken pie in 'A Proper Newe Booke of Cookery', the one with 'barbarries' (or gooseberries or grapes). I managed to locate a shop that sells Middle Eastern barberries. The English ones are pretty-much non-existent now as they foster wheat rust so were eradicated wholesale, so unless you grow them in your own garden you can't get them (which might actually be a good idea for my back yard). So if anyone has tried that particular recipe and has any tips, I'd love to hear them!

ciao
Lucrezia
