Uh oh. The search aspect of the Florilegium is simply a variant of
Google and uses their database. I'm not sure what you mean by your
"search system". Can you use Google from their home page? Email me
offlist and I'll see what we can do to fix this. Anyone else having a
similar problem?
<<< Does anyone have period recipes for milk-based soaps? >>>
First off, let me verify that you are looking for "soaps" and not
"soups".
If it is indeed the former, then check this file in the PERSONAL-CARE
section:
soap-msg (43K) 6/26/04 Period soap and soapmaking.
These in the CRAFTS section might also be good places to look. I
don't remember much info about period milk-based soaps, but milk was
used in paints and glues, so it is possible.
soapmaking-msg (61K) 7/23/04 Period and modern soapmaking
techniques.
Soapmakng-CMA-art (24K) 10/ 6/97 "Soapmaking in the Current Middle
Ages" by
Gillian Fhlaitheamhail (Fraya
Davis).
Lye-Soap-art (23K) 8/ 8/97 "The history of and how to make
soap"
by Baroness Leonora Kathryn
de Provence.
Okay, I plugged in "milk" and "soap" on the search engine and got a
larger number of hits (55!) than I expected. Including one on making
goat's milk soap in the Soapmaking-CMA-art file. I suspect that that
is modern though and not a period recipe.
There is also a mention of putting the almond remains/chunks from
almond milk making in soaps as an additive. I thought that was nice
recycling.
And a file I'd forgotten about:
Hist-of-Soap-art (9K) 8/31/04 "What no Soap?" by Lord Xaviar the
Eccentric.
