I'm pretty sure the book title (and dish name) is Spotted Dog, which  
the author goes on to allege is a corruption of Dough, elsewhere seen  
corrupted as [Spotted] Dick. Pup wouldn't follow this pattern, if  
pattern indeed it is.

It's one a' them steamed puddings with raisins (the spots).
