1493.  IIRC (from the Diario), Columbus brought tobacco back on the first 
voyage which ended early in 1493.  Because we have a detailed account, we 
can fix a date for the initial arrival of tobacco in Europe.  Of course, we 
have no idea whatg they did with the sample.
