Until 1660 the Church discussed if the chocolate was allowed to be consumed
in Lent. The Pope Pious the V was a big consumer and he lighted up the
prohibition. (The ladies in Mexico and Peru, the biggest colonial towns,
drank chocolate in Mass and the servants went around serving chocolate
during the services.).
