It appears that it was one of the Classical World's best birth  
controls. Unfortunately, it grew only in a small region of north  
Africa. The Romans tried to grow it elsewhere, but didn't succeed.  
They eventually harvested it to extinction. It probably wasn't as  
effective as modern chemical methods, but it was better than nothing.
