No, lactose is lactose is lactose. It's a particular word that
describes a very specific sugar, unlike a word like alcohol which
describes a family of chemicals rather than a specific chemical.

What people don't realize is that, like any organic product, milk has
quite a wide variety of different chemicals in it- different sugars,
fats, etc, and quite often people will decide that if they have a
problem and the problem goes away when they stop drinking milk,
they're lactose intolerant. And many physicians who are not
pediatricians or allergists will tend to lump all milk difficulties in
as lactose intolerance simply because the solution is easy- stop
drinking milk, whereas determining exactly what the particular problem
is with milk can be difficult and expensive.

Bottom line- see what works for you, and go with it. If you want to
know exactly what the problem is, go to an allergist. But, unless
you've got a degree in a medical specialty related to the topic, don't
try to diagnose or treat the problem. It's a good way to get yourself
and the pt into a heap of trouble.
