First, Phillipa, i think you don't need to throw everything away! 
Unless there are actually nests of ants in them, the food should be 
fine (my mom had a large potted plant in her kitchen and it turned 
out that ants were nesting in it...)

Next, i've never found bleach or ammonia to help when i've had ants. 
Maybe ants are different in different parts of the US. I live in 
Northern California

I have found that cinnamon oil (from the health food store) works to 
dissuade ants. Using a Q-tip i rub the oil over their trail. Then i 
find where they're coming in and stick a Q-tip or a bit of cotton 
soaked in cinnamon oil into the opening.
