Well... clove oil is an anesthetic (sold as a temporary tootache reliever, 
mostly), and is also used to anesthetize fish that need to be marked or 
worked on in some way. An overdose of clove oil is a quick way to euthanize 
sick fish too, so I wouldn't be surprised if it had the same effect on other 
critters...
