maybe its just me (thanks for changing the subject line!) but I've always thought of jelly as clear, starting with a fruit 
juice, wine or such while jam has bits in it, starting with whole fruit that isnt strained.
--Anne-Marie, who makes jam mostly but has been known to make a jelly in her day :)
