No I was indeed thinking of Quinoa.  I knew its name started with a qu just 
could not think of the rest.  Thought that birch sap might have been used as 
a source of sugar in pre 1600 Europe but was not sure.  Still unsure about 
some of the tree nuts as being new world.  Pecans,  cashews  and brazil nuts 
are but I think that there are also few other far less common nuts as well. 
Got to check my sources.
