I thought they only did that when the baker erred, and made cuskeynoles in the wrong shape, which everyone knows makes them taste like meat gone bad....

  No, actually that one is true. Medieval people used an enormous  
  variety of expensive spices to cover the taste of bread that had gone  
  off... ;-)
