[Sca-cooks] Forbidden Foods

My favorite local non-commercial radio station aired on Sunday an
episode of a radio program i enjoy (but don't always agree with), To
The Best Of Our Knowledge. The episode was called "Forbidden Foods"
Among others, it included a segment with Andrew Zimmern, extolling
odd foods. He seemed genuinely enthusiastic about getting to eat
coconut grubs and such. However TTBOOK did play part of his show
featuring khlii. Zimmern is not generally squeamish, based on little
bits they played from other shows. But in this case, it really
sounded disgusting. I wonder if perhaps his "hosts" served him some
atypical version just to see his response.
I say this because IIRC i sent to this list several modern khlii
recipes from actual modern Moroccans, or former Moroccans, and they
were all fond of it and even made prepared at home, and said it was
not stinky or revolting.

checked and it is right on the front page as of today, but in case
someone wants to check it out in the future, you can search the

On a side note, TTBOOK has included interviews with Francine Segan, author of:
"The Philosopher's Kitchen: recipes from Ancient Greece and Rome for
the modern cook"
(in TTBOOK Program 04-08-08-A)
and
"Shakespeare's Kitchen: renaissance recipes for the contemporary cook"
(in TTBOOK Program 03-12-21-A)
Both books NOT to be relied on for re-creating either Ancient Greek
and Roman food or food of Shakespeare's day. They are for the
"modern" or "contemporary" cook and clearly "inspired by" rather than
re-creations of historical food. The recipes may be delicious (i
don't know, i haven't made any), but they're not historical.
