I guess we use the word differently. To me, something vile is not 
necessarily disgusting as may be the connotation you are using. When 
I say something is vile, it simply means it is bad but in a more 
emphatic sense, as in undesirable in the extreme.

Dehydrated, reconstituted starch products like Minute Rice or 
dehydrated mashed potatoes are just not to my liking at all.

I hope that makes sense.

But anyway... the suggestion somebody made for precooking your rice 
and putting it in boiling bags is a good one. Saves a lot of time and 
worry and cleanup. I'll have to use that one in the future. I've done 
pre-packaging of lots of other foods for camping in the past and it 
works great, all you have to do is boil water and put the bag in. A 
few minutes later it's hot and ready to eat.
