As an American who is now living in Ontario, I can agree that not all
poutine is created equal. IMO, the fast food chain Harvey's has some of the
best in the Windsor area. Personally, I think the fries have to be fresh,
and at the bottom. Then the cheese curds, and top with a *really* good
gravy, also fresh, so that the cheese has a chance to melt.

Before I moved to Windsor, I'd had poutine first when going to school in
Sault Ste. Marie, MI. We'd go over to the Canadian side at least once a week
to visit friends, eat cheap prime rib (oh, the days when the exchange rate
was 45%), visit the casino, etc. We found the best poutine there at the time
(1999 - 2001) was at the Husky truck stop - their gravy was divine, as I
remember. I have yet to eat at Windsor's Husky station.

I also agree that poutine is not everyday food. I'm diabetic, so while I can
plan for the carbs and fat involved, it's not something to make a regular
part of anyone's diet, unless you're trying to gain weight quickly in an
unhealthy way!
