In Welsh, Arthur's spear (or lance, since it is used in jousting) is 
Rhongomynad, later Rhongwenna, and shortened to Ron.  I suspect, but don't 
know, that the word means rowan and relates the weapon to the hard, dense 
wood from which it is made.
