Here in San Francisco, home of truly sour sour-dough bread, there's a 
local chain of restaurants and bakeries (name forgotten) that still 
serves thick soups and stews in their own small boule-shaped 
sourdough bread bowls.
I don't recall if the company was doing this before the advent of the 
local Ren Fair. But i remember in the 1970s some sort of stew was 
served this way at the Autumn NoCal version of the 
mother-of-all-Ren-Fairs, which began in SoCal in the Spring.
