Most of the major cities in Western Europe were originally Roman cities and 
Roman drainage and sewage systems.  The remains of these system are 
encountered fairly often when the old sections of the cities are being 
worked on.  How well they were maintained and whether they were expanded 
when the cities grew is another question.
