My new home was built in 1927.  It was the residence of the Superintendent of Schools, which then was a prestigious and profitable position.  It has 9 ft ceilings and consequently , 9 ft kitchen cupboards.
 
I stand 5'5".
 
I purchased a 4 step folding step ladder that allowed access to the upper reaches.
 
Did I mention that the rooms are all fitted with ceiling fans?   HMN ... must be the brain damage caused by the impact with said ceiling fans.  
 
I solved the issue by finding a housemate who is 6'4".  He is both useful and decorative.
