And this brings it back to knowing what your own dietary 
need/restrictions are and choosing accordingly. In a case like this, 
the person allergic to X can ask if anything he/she is contemplating 
ordering contains X.

Due to the great visibility of these issues in recent times (hence 
the new labelling requirements), most restaurants are very happy to 
answer such questions truthfully as they certainly have no desire to get sued.
