Don't just take Stephen Fry's word. I can by young gourds for cooking 
- the variety that turn into luffas when old - at the Berkeley Bowl 
and any Asian food market. Heck, I was eating them back in the late 
60s/early 70s, when i was a vegetarian.

I like them (and most other young gourds) infinitely better than 
zucchini, of which i am not fond.
