As I recall, there're some nice food references included from Roman  
satirical poetry and drama/comedy, but as you mention, some of the  
food substitutions are not only inexplicable, but peculiarly English,  
as well, like food being browned in butter before cooking in liquid.  
It's like seeing Apicius through the eyes of Mrs. Beeton.
