I don't recall if it was Robert Graves' fictional Caligula who cured  
his co-emperor's cough, or the BBC's, but there were repeated  
references to Gemellus' cough, alleged to have been brought on by  
eating too much pastry. The first references were kindly and  
solicitous, subsequent versions more peeved, and finally a permanent  
cure was implemented.
