If you want to do the foodie supply scene, get a copy of the
book
A Cook's Tour to Chicago

Chicago suburbs have outlet stores like Wilton and Chef's Catalog plus
there are some great restaurant supply stores. They are worth the stop.

If you like Mexican try and get into one of Rick Bayless's restaurants.
http://www.rickbayless.com/ You may not be able to get a reservation.

For food also check out where Tony Bourdain ate when he did Chicago.

Also check out what RoadFood recommends for Chicago and Wisconsin.

Have a great time.
