were either milling grain for bread or malt for ale- Thank you all!

 From your description, any chance it's some kind of small mill? Two  
flat cylindrical stones, one on top of the other, pierced down the  
center for an axis, the top one maybe a little smaller, possibly some  
kind of spout for liquids at or near the junction, or possibly a  
handle for turning?
