Another substitution idea:  under-ripe oranges of whatever type you can 
get. It helps to live in the right place, but my parents have two orange 
trees and we were never patient enough to leave the fruit on long enough 
to develop sweetness, so for years we thought it only gave sour fruit.  
Heheheheh oops.
