Also in Google Books I found an interesting entry in "E.J. Brill's
First Encyclopedia of Islam".  The listing for borax says that natron
was considered a type of borax.  It goes on to talk about Armenian
borax and bakers' borax, among others.  The wording is confusing; I
can't tell if natron is supposedly the same thing as Armenian borax,
etc., or if it's merely a related substance.  It might be worth
researching further.
