Rather than a standard Scout Yucca pack, I had an extremely expandable pack
my father designed on a homemade frame. By the time I was Senior Patrol
Leader, I was carrying 60 to 80 pounds of gear. When I carried a dutch
oven, it was lashed inside the pack top to frame at the bottom of the load.
That is far more comfortable than trying to carry a dutch oven by hand. The
original packframe died and I transferred the pack bag to a commercial
mountaineering frame. I haven't used it in years, but the rig is stored in
the basement.
