[Sca-cooks] An overlooked feast day of culinary significance...

Hullo, the list!

I missed this one, although I did think of it at the time, but there's
been this high-school-graduating-and-moving-to-another-city-to-go-to-
college Evil Spawn to deal with, so I promised myself I'd post
something to mark the occasion at my earliest opportunity, which was
now.

Wednesday, June 24th, was the feast of Saint John the Baptist.

For those of you who celebrate such things, a belated happy one to
you. For those of you who don't, you can still celebrate the official
date which, according to Le Menagier, you begin gathering your green
walnuts for making mixed preserves/compost, the official beginning of
cherry season in a number of countries/cultures, and the official
kickoff of the big Danish herring season (as in, when the fleets go
out, people eat raw fillets with funky garnishes while dancing in the
streets of Copenhagen, the economic dominance of the Hanseatic League
is once again safeguarded, or something like that, etc.)

I managed to miss most or all of the Grand Central Oyster Bar's June
herring festival, which is a shame since this is probably one of the
ones I would have shown up for and actually gotten what I asked for:
it seems that every time I show up in the Official Season for shad or
softshell crabs, they've just run out. For some reason they never seem
to be out of fresh, raw herring in June. I can't imagine why that
is ;-). I'm sure they'd cook it, too, but I usually just get the raw
fillets with capers, chopped onion, egg yolk, etc. -- a classic.

Well, enjoy your cherries, your compost, and your herring!

when we all ought to worry about our own souls, and other people's
bellies."
