<<I haven't seen the book, but I gather from references online that the 
chapters are organized by time period, running from Roman to 20th 
century. Which one is this from? That should give us at least some 
idea of the date.

The section is entitled "Roman Origins and British Tart Baking Before 1700", which is a pretty wide spread IMO.
I'm thinking it would be 1500-ish.
