About slugs...
Slugs are hermaphrodites, and every slug begins with both female and
male reproductive organs.
To mate, slugs encircle each other and exchange sperm through their
protruded genitalia, which are located under the mantle on their
back, behind the head. A few days later each slug lays about 30 eggs
in a hole in the ground or some other protected place.
In many slugs, however, the penis has a cork-screw-like curl and
during mating it may become entangled in the other slug's genitalia.
So to separate themselves, one or both slugs chew off the other's
penis.
Without a penis, a slug is still able to mate using only its female genitalia.
