A cubit is the distance between the elbow and the tip of the middle finger. 
A quick and dirty calculation is a foot and a half, but it practice 
different cubits have measured between 14 inches to almost 3 feet (IIRC). 
Again IIRC, the Egyptian cubit varied between 17 and 24 inches.
