This is very possible.  The ME word "tinkere" (our modern tinker) denotes an 
itinerent tin smith who repairs pots and pans.  The word may trace back into 
Anglo-Saxon.

Tinning for decoration has been done since Roman times and tinware has been 
around since the early 17th Century, but I haven't encountered much about 
transitional work.
