Well, I am really into the 'local' aspect of ingredients. I shop two local farmer's markets and I have over 130 square feet of space on several plots in our community garden (right across the street). Here in Marin County (just north of San Francisco) we are blessed with a long growing season, local wine, cheese, beef, and so much more. We even have two bee hives in the community garden. I have a meyers lemon, a bay tree and lots of perennial herbsj on my patio.

And basic ingredients are the thing. I just purged the remaining packaged goods from my pantry. I shop around the edges of the grocery store for what I cannot get at the farmer's market. I wish I could afford all organic but one does the best possible.

Bottom line, what I grow/buy, cook and enjoy is healthier eating and better for the environment. A fellow gardener here in the neighborhood and I meet for a meal in our kitchens and proudly say "this salad has my lettuce, my zucchini, my pea pods, my red onions, my herbs" or "this soup has my garlic, my onion, my tat soi".

My biggest problem is the lack of freezer space to keep homemade broths and some of the excess produce from the garden. I have 3 colors of zucchini's and a dozen tomato plants in 7 different colors so I do donate what I cannot trade with other gardeners to the local food bank.

Good eating to all,

Katira al-Maghrebiyya
