Definitions may have varied quite a bit.
 From the book titled:
Explanations of all terms used in coockery [sic] - cellaring and the  
preparation of drinks : pocket dictionary. 1908  By Kurt Heppe
which states on page 222
Nattes; twists.
Actually there are lots of terms for wafers and wafer like objects.  
Every language seems to have
one or two general terms with even more regional ones for all those  
items made in irons.
