First, Bear is correct about student newspapers and the student journalist.
The newbie journalist is learning the ropes. If the author of the article
was a little more seasoned s/he would have gotten information from the
Nicole person of others to talk to, instead you have a one woman sewing bee
who is a bit ticked that no one showed up.

Most SCA groups based at a University is suppose to have things in place
with the University newspaper and in some cases TV station. If a reporter
wants to do a story on the group, the paper/station is suppose to have a
contact number so as to coordinate a time and people to talk to.

As to the fluctuation of members of a group with a University. Those groups
are the hardest to maintain especially if you do not have a local group of
non students for support.
The students are trying to balance school, learning new stuff every day with
a new hobby and things can get chaotic. A local non student group can add
stability if they have good stable active members. There is also the
upheaval that happens when student officers are replaced and the adjustment
to the change. Or the active student members graduate leaving new students
to fly by the seat of their pants because most students do not foresee the
need to train their replacements.
I will say that the not foreseeing is not student exclusive as I have seen
this in some non student groups.
I have seen and it may not be a common thing but there seems to be the bare
minimum done for recruitment as most are working on themselves and are not
quite ready to instruct others.
