We are not splitting hairs.

Because i imagine that your desire is to communicate well in your blog.

Regardless of the past history of the word, i know that in Modern 
American English, mead is an alcoholic drink. If your desire is to 
convey that these honey waters were alcoholic, perhaps mead is a 
suitable word. But since i, at least, doubt they were, i think mead 
is very much the wrong word.
