AFAIK you have to get in touch with the owner of the copyright to the reproduction you want to use. Your best bet ias usually to contact the museum holding the object - they usually have (or will make) photos. Some places even allow you to make your own, to which you then hold the copyright, but most will not allow publication. 

This is a very annoying issuie since many countries differ in how seriously they take it. Some European museums don't manage picture copyrights at all because as far as they are concerned, 'fair use' is a broad categiorey that includes a broad swathe of publications. But publishers are generally quite paranoid from what I've heard.
