Back from DC to see this movie...and yes, it is very well done. Definitely
better than any of the challenge-type programs on FoodTV and/or Bravo.
These guys have to be proficient in everything to be named "Craftsman of
France"...the actual title is MOF...and they are signified by wearing a red,
white and blue marking on their chefs' jackets...usually the collar, but
often a patch on the sleeve. There isn't just one winner but rather however
many rack up enough points to pass what amounts to an exam...covering
everything a pastry chef should know...and these guys are the "creme de la
creme."

Much of the movie/documentary was devoted to following three of the chefs,
one from Germany, one from France and one from Chicago (who just happens to
run the only pure pastry chef training school in the US), as they prepare
for the event. It deals with what they have in mind as they design their
entries, influences and assistance they receive from those around them,
including a couple of MOF's that advise the chef from Chicago. Then a good
bit deals with the preparation for the event during the three days leading
up to the final judging.

We thought it was very well done, and showed not only their high points but
also their very low points. If you get a chance to see it, by all means do!
