There are a couple of middle eastern markets in your area that used to carry them at the counter. I found it reasonably price, and you didn't have to pay for shipping.

Subject: [Sca-cooks] Saffron Query

A member of my household who will remain nameless (what is the younger generation coming to) likes saffron and will be at Pennsic this year; Elizabeth and I will not. Does anyone on the list have a good source for it, either at Pennsic or online? A little googling suggests that about $5/g or $100/oz is the best online price one can reasonably hope for. The pepperer's guild used to have it, as I recall, for less than that--but that was a long long time ago.
