Yes, but it may be a different varietal than is found in Polynesia.  The 
plant is indigenous to tropical Asia and was carried into the Pacific by the 
Polynesian expansion between 3000 and 1000 BCE.  It was brought to the 
Hawaiian Islands with the first Polynesians migrants around 500 CE and they 
brought it to be food.
