The Omnia Cibaria, probably early fourteenth  century, references oxyzucarum, which  to me sounds like something very similar. Of course one first thinks of sekanjabin, but I suspect common ancestors rather than direct borrowing.

Betreff: [Sca-cooks] Sour syrup?

I saw a reference to sour syrup (siropus acetosus) in a couple of the Tacuinum Sanitatis manuscripts.  Does anyone have any idea as to what it might be?  In both manuscripts, the images associated with it show a merchant dispensing a jar to a customer.
