Greetings! Recently there was a discussion on one of the lists I'm on
about what some food was...(butter?, cheese?, bread?)...and I can't
remember which list, hence this post to multiple groups. There's a
depiction of Dutch pancakes/waffles (1560) in the Museum Boijmans with
this odd-shaped food which, it appears, they indicate is butter since
it's sitting on what they identify as a butter dish
(http://alma.boijmans.nl/en/object/1006%20(OK)/). There is an
intriguing remnant of a period butter dish on that page, complete with a
spike in the center of the dish which might be to keep the large chunk
from sliding around.
However, various of you might like the searchable database that is
available from this museum. An explanation of what types of things can
be searched for is on the "home" page, but you need to click for an
English translation. In this one painting there is a ceramic frying
pan, an iron hanging tripod for (I assume) the frying pan to hang on
over the fire, a chimney crook, metal jug and more.
This is a fascinating site on which to become lost! Just found an
improvised spit in front of home fireplace. There's a chicken on a
metal rod, one end of the rod on an X-shaped piece of wood and the other
on an overturned, three-legged kettle! No need for a fancy, permanent,
intrusive metal contraption!
