You have a little gem there, I'd love to have a copy.  That said, keep in 
mind that the author is using the earliest Italian recipes of which he 
knows, not the earliest European recipes and, IIRC, he doesn't source the 
Native American recipes.  You also need to keep in mind that there is a 
linguistic shift as the new plants become associated with the old names.  I 
don't think Miliano carefully differentiates the potential for a dish to be 
either Old World or New World squashes.

I haven't seen a copy for a number of years, so memory is a little vague. 
Be critical if using the book as a culinary history reference, but enjoy the 
book.  It is well written and probably reasonably accurate.
