[Sca-cooks] Period food for demo

Period use of spice would be a great demo. Heck, I've done just "scratch and sniff" with spices -- put out spices in their whole forms (usually a little in a babyfood jar), label each, encourage people to touch and sniff, patter about the spices, how they were used in the middle ages, and where you might come by them locally (we have several indian groceries locally, so common whole spices are both cheap and easy to come by). I usually also put out the cheapo wooden mortar and pestle and let the kids pound on spices in it. The three that get the biggest reactions are cinnamon sticks, sugar cones, and rosewater (hey honey, come smell this cinnamon, etc).

toodles, margaret

Subject: [Sca-cooks] Period food for demo

I'm looking for suggestions re Medieval food and cooking for an outdoor
demo I will be attending at the end of September. It will be a large crowd-
several thousand, we can't have a fire.
I was thinking creating a display about period use of spices.
