[Sca-cooks] pickling

One of the things that makes me think there's an easy answer is "The Music
Man" mentions pickle barrels as a pleasure of a byegone era (meaning it was
recent enough to be in living memory), so even in, say, the 1800's, this
should have been something America had the knowhow for.
