This reminds me of a Baumkuchen, or tree cake (German origions and imensly popular in Japan).  Google that and you will see that in all its permiations, including how to do it over a BBQ with a rotisary.  I found this through a recipe in a "Bakers" cook book from the 1800's  It seems to go back quite a ways but I havn't reserched how far.

Wikipedia seems to indicate it's 18th century. The name "trdelnik" comes from trdlo, the wooden stake the cake is wrapped around for cooking which gives it its traditional hollow shape.

Glad you are enjoying Prague.
